Set 1,680 metres above sea level within the dramatic landscape of Jebel Jais, Saij Mountain Lodge is a 70-key mountain hospitality destination designed to immerse guests in the natural, cultural and environmental character of Ras Al Khaimah.
Developed through Marjan Design Lab, Saij is guided by a design philosophy centred on restraint, sensitivity and a profound understanding of place. Rather than imposing itself onto the mountain, the project is conceived as part of it, with low-lying architectural forms embedded into the terrain, materials selected in dialogue with the surrounding geology, and spatial planning informed by the contours, climate, light and stillness of Jebel Jais.
Each guest lodge is carefully positioned within the mountainside to blend into its surroundings while framing expansive views across rugged peaks, farmland terraces and natural oasis landscapes. Architecture becomes both shelter and experience, balancing technical innovation with sensitivity to wind, water, altitude and light. Across the resort, buildings, pathways and terraces are arranged to create moments of gathering, pause and reflection, using space to foster a sense of belonging and strengthen the connection between people, place and one another.
The lodge experience unfolds gradually through a sequence of arrival spaces, terraces and pathways positioned across the mountain terrain. A dedicated arrival pavilion introduces guests to the landscape before they travel deeper into the site, where lounges, dining spaces and guest lodges are oriented towards panoramic mountain vistas and sheltered outdoor settings that encourage immersion in the surrounding environment.
Saij’s architecture draws from the cultural and agricultural history of Jebel Jais, taking inspiration from ancient tribal presence, seasonal nomadism and mountain livelihoods. These influences are translated into contemporary forms through materiality, spatial sequencing and carefully considered orientation, allowing guests to experience heritage through architecture rather than interpretation. Shared gathering spaces reinterpret the spirit of the traditional Arabian majlis, while farmland areas, outdoor settings and communal terraces encourage slower movement, conversation and connection.
Beyond accommodation, the resort is designed as an immersive mountain experience. Hiking trails, wellness activities, heritage experiences, creative workshops and educational programmes are integrated throughout the development, allowing guests to engage with the culture, ecology and landscape of Jebel Jais in meaningful ways. Activities range from hiking, meditation and outdoor fitness to traditional farming practices, local crafts, cooking experiences and environmental learning focused on the flora, fauna and geology of the mountains.
Sustainability was embedded into this project from the outset. The landscape strategy prioritises the protection and restoration of the mountain environment through resilient planting, endemic species propagation and water-conscious systems, including integrated greywater upcycling and sustainable land management approaches. Existing plant life is preserved wherever possible, while architectural and landscape interventions are carefully considered to minimise visual impact and maintain harmony with the terrain.
Saij Mountain Lodge advances Marjan Design Lab’s wider vision for hospitality in Ras Al Khaimah, creating destinations that draw meaning from their surroundings, strengthen the identity of the landscape and demonstrate how thoughtful design can preserve the integrity of the environment while deepening the experience of place.
